Dear Colleagues,

For more than 25 years of our Institute’s existence, we have been accompanying the fascinating, extremely dynamic changes in the processes of communication, mediatisation, digitisation and algorithmisation of life. We ask questions, seek answers, comment and argue. We introduce students to this complex subject matter. Our conferences document and keep record of the changes of the mediatised reality and try to anticipate, as well as indicate the direction of development of communication and media in the future.

This year we are opening a discussion on media practices and competences. The focus is on the human being – the passive and active media user. The pace and scope of the ‘new communication revolution’, the features of which we identified at our two previous conferences, cover almost every area of life. The growing role of algorithmisation affects everyone’s private life, people’s social activity and systems that regulate the functioning of social and political relationships.

That is why we want to discuss challenges, problems and the individual’s ways of coping in an all-encompassing world of algorithms. We propose to continue the discussion on:

  • technological changes and their impact on the dissemination, processing and management of information
  • changes in the media professions in shaping the new order in an algorithmized environment
  • human participation in public discourses that create and intersect in online and offline spaces.

We will start our conference with a panel discussion

In Pursuit of Competence

The conference proceedings will be held in four thematic sessions:

  • SESSION 1. MEDIA PROFESSIONS: ETHICS – DILEMMAS – CHALLENGES
  • SESSION 2. MEDIA ENVIRONMENTS: TECHNOLOGIES – INFORMATION MANAGEMENT – MONITORING
  • SESSION 3. PUBLIC DISCOURSE: ACTORS – PLATFORMS – INFLUENCE
  • SESSION 4. THROUGH THE EYES OF YOUNG SCIENTISTS
Thematic Programme

We invite both those of you who would like to describe and analyse current phenomena in the title areas and those who would like to reflect on new phenomena, discourses and communication technologies.

The conference will take place on 17-18 October 2024, in the building of the Faculty of Management and Social Communication of the Jagiellonian University, Łojasiewicza 4 Street, 30-348 Kraków. Conference abstract submission will take place via the website idmiksuj.edu.pl from May 20 to July 8, 2024.

The basic cost of attending the conference on site (payment booked by 31 July) is 530 PLN, for PTKS members – 480 PLN, for PhD students, remote participants and non-presenting participants – 450 PLN. The cost of participation for those wishing to pay after July 31 is 50 PLN higher.
